FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES

Resolving crises in families and communities:

The health and well-being of the family is crucial to the development and strength of our communities. Many vulnerable families are affected by problems such as drug and alcohol abuse, crime, mental illness, homelessness and unemployment.

  • Every night in London over 6,000 homeless families have to stay temporarily in B&B accommodation
  • 17% of UK children were living in poverty in 2009-10
  • Two women die every week in England and Wales, and one man every fortnight, as a result of domestic violence
FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES

Our Approach:
Simple, Natural, Effortless Meditation

The David Lynch Foundation UK offers the Transcendental Meditation programme to strengthen relationships and contribute to the stability of family life in society. This stress reducing meditation programme helps families and communities in difficulty, as well as educational organisations facing the deleterious effects of extreme stress. Transcendental Meditation is a simple, natural, effortless, and universally applicable technique that is easily learned by anyone.

Scientific research shows that Transcendental Meditation reduces stress and improves general mental and physical well-being. When practised regularly morning and evening, this programme gives deep relaxation, which provides balance to mind and body. This reduces anxiety and depression, develops inner calmness, and promotes greater self esteem and increased happiness.

Research also shows decreased dependence on alcohol and drugs. Amongst students, research findings include decreased absenteeism, increased intelligence and improved academic achievement.

Transcendental Meditation is an ideal programme for this purpose, because it does not involve any religion, philosophy, or change in lifestyle, but rather upholds and uplifts the cultural and religious traditions of all people.

CASE STUDY: Children creating peace & harmony in Belfast:
With sponsorship form the David Lynch Foundation, the Stress Free Schools programme, “Quiet Time” has been successfully introduced to hundreds of children in schools on both sides of the Belfast Peace Line. The children and teachers practice Transcendental Meditation, twice a day together in school.

The Belfast Peace Line project will include the David Lynch Community Performing Arts Centre, a shared space, where children, and adults, from the divided Protestant and Catholic areas can learn together. The students will practice TM together, naturally promoting peace and reconciliation in the surrounding area. The college will incorporate drama, dance and screen acting classes which will also encourage people of all ages from both communities to learn together giving them inspiration, aspiration and hope.
