What constitutes a holistic programme to help the homeless and formerly imprisoned individuals successfully reintegrate into society? Along with proper housing, education, job training, and a network of qualified support, these adults and children must be equipped with the tools to overcome the traumatic stresses that fuelled their descent into homelessness. These stresses, if left unchecked, often cause them to relapse.
The David Lynch Foundation UK offers a re-entry programme for the homeless: a practical, highly effective, humane approach which reduces acute and chronic stress and stress-related disorders, decreases anxiety and depression, overcomes addictions, and simultaneously develops the brain and creative potential of the individual for a healthy, productive, self-sufficient life.
Transcendental Meditation is a simple, natural, effortless technique, easily learned by anyone, regardless of age, educational background, or walk of life. Transcendental Meditation produces a unique and profound state of rest and relaxation, which eliminates the build up of acute stress, while also promoting healthy, coherent brain functioning - the basis for improved decision-making, judgement, and impulse control.
The programme does not involve any religion, philosophy, or change in lifestyle, and anyone of any age, background, or creed can learn the technique easily. It is taught and administered by specially qualified teachers of Transcendental Meditation
CASE STUDY: The David Lynch Foundation, in collaboration with Children of the Night, has introduced Transcendental Meditation to adolescents to ease their traumatic stress. Children of the Night, based in Los Angeles and founded by Dr. Lois Lee, is a private, non-profit shelter and school dedicated to rescuing children between the ages of 11 and 17 from prostitution, providing shelter, safety, re-education, and stress management.
