Traumatic Stress:
The Silent Epidemic among the Young

Traumatic stress is a reality for thousands of children and young adults in the UK who have grown up in a climate of fear, bullying, violence, or substance abuse—and intense stress impedes academic achievement and undermines physical and mental health.

  • 50,000 children take prescribed antidepressants
  • Over 850,000 young people aged between 5 and16 years are diagnosed with a mental disorder
  • One in 20 school children are affected by ADHD
  • Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-24 year olds

Our Approach: The Quiet Time ProgramME

Learning readiness is at the core of any comprehensive programme for raising student performance. By developing the full brain, reducing the acute stresses that undermine learning and health, and improving the overall environment of the schools, the Quiet Time Programme is a practical, highly effective approach to promoting learning readiness among students - thereby markedly improving their academic performance and success in life.

The Quiet Time Programme, including Transcendental Meditation, has already been incorporated into schools in the UK as well as hundreds of public, charter, and private schools throughout the United States and around the world. Supported by an extensive body of independent research verifying its benefits, students participating in Quiet Time score higher on intelligence tests, close the achievement gap, improve test scores, and have higher graduation rates compared to students in control groups. Meditating students also show reduced stress levels, anxiety, depression, violence, and substance abuse. This results in reduced absenteeism, dropout rates, suspensions, and expulsions.

Transcendental Meditation is a simple, easily-learned technique, practiced by students and teachers for 10 to 20 minutes twice daily, sitting comfortably with the eyes closed. Transcendental Meditation does not involve any religion, philosophy, or change in lifestyle.

CASE STUDY: The Maharishi Free School, a state funded Free School in Lancashire provides a dynamic learning environment combined with a harmonious atmosphere, in which children aged from 4 – 16 receive the uniquely effective system of Consciousness Based Education.  Creativity and intelligence are systematically developed with a few minutes of Transcendental Meditation at the beginning and end of the school day.

Even though completely non-selective academically, the Maharishi Free School has achieved the top category of “Outstanding” in reports by the Government inspectorate of schools, Ofsted, and the School’s GCSE examination results rank it not only amongst the highest in the county of Lancashire, but also in the top 2.5% of all schools nationally.  These results have been consistent since the School opened 25 years ago.
